The accredited Laboratory of the Institute for Oliveculture at ZRS Koper is equipped with state-of-the-art analytical equipment that ensures high quality, reliability, and traceability of measurements at the national and international levels.

The equipment is used for chemical and sensory analyses of olive oil and other plant-based products, as well as for the development and validation of new analytical methods. Modern systems enable the precise quantification of bioactive compounds, the detection of contaminants such as MOSH and MOAH, and the verification of the quality and authenticity of olive oil and other foods.


High Performance Liquid Chromatograph (UHPLC)

  1. Mobile-phase degasser
  2. Gradient pump with a flow rate from 0.05 mL/min to 5 mL/min at pressures up to 600 bar
  3. Automatic sampler and injector with a volume range from 0.1 µL to 100 µL
  4. Column thermostat with temperature control from 10 °C below ambient temperature to 65 °C
  5. UV detector with a 1024-diode array (DAD) covering the range from 190 nm to 640 nm

Tandem mass spectrometer in a quadrupole–hexapole–quadrupole (QQQ) configuration

  1. Mass range from 10 amu to 2,200 amu
  2. At least 500 MRM transitions per method segment
  3. Polarity switching time of less than 30 ms
  4. Mass accuracy better than 0.01% in the range from 1,000 amu to 2,000 amu
  5. Linear dynamic range ≥ 6 decades
  6. Ion source: atmospheric-pressure electrospray ionization (AP-ESI)
  7. Integrated system for automatic ion-optics optimization and mass-axis calibration with automatic infusion of a calibration standard (AP-ESI ion source)
  8. The QQQ mass spectrometer supports the following operating modes:
    1. MS scanning and MS/MS product-ion scanning
    2. MRM measurement of multiple-ion MS/MS transitions
    3. SIM measurement
    4. MS/MS scanning of neutral losses/gains
    5. precursor-ion scanning.
  9. Nitrogen generator for supplying the ESI mass spectrometer (output flow 30 L/min at 6.5 bar)

All equipment includes installation qualification (IQ) for the software, HPLC, and QQQ systems in accordance with GLP guidelines, as well as operational/performance qualification (OQ/PV) of the software, HPLC, and QQQ systems in accordance with GLP guidelines.

FT-NIR Spectrometer MPA II, Bruker (manufacturer: Bruker Optics)

The MPA II is a powerful tool for developing sophisticated calibration methods for laboratory or process needs, as well as an easy-to-use instrument for routine QA/QC work. Its modular technology allows individual configuration for each specific analytical task.
